Babacar, 43, originally from Senegal, has been traveling regularly to Italy since 2006 with his theatre company. In 2022, driven by the serious political issues in his country, he decided to settle permanently in Italy and applied for international asylum. He now resides in Milan at the sociocultural association SUNUGAL, which fosters dialogue between Italy and Senegal.
In May 2024, Babacar came into contact with Work Is Progress and was enrolled in a personalized active job search path designed for refugees and asylum seekers. He attended an intensive Italian course, which served as preparation for the B driving licence theory exam. Within a few months, he learned Italian, passed the driving licence theory exam, and participated in a series of six job counselling meetings (Job Lab), acquiring essential digital and work skills. During individual interviews with the job counselor, he expressed a strong interest in logistics. As a result, he was directed to a professional course organized by Soleterre in this field, which included both theoretical and practical training, allowing him to obtain a forklift driving license.
In September 2024, Babacar participated in a guided tour of the Chanel boutique warehouse, a training experience that marked the conclusion of his support journey. Thanks to the program’s assistance and his determination, Babacar secured a job as a warehouse laborer at Chanel in Rozzano, with a fixed-term contract. Babacar’s story highlights the significance of targeted support and training in creating real opportunities for social and work inclusion. Thanks to Work Is Progress, Babacar has successfully transformed his skills and aspirations into a new professional and personal reality.
