Azeb, an Italian citizen of Eritrean origin, left her country at the age of 20, after studying Italian in Asmara. After living in various locations in central and southern Italy, she settled in Milan, in the San Siro district. A single mother without family or friend networks, she is housed in social housing.
In February 2024, thanks to the network active in Municipality 7, where the Work Is Progress Center is located, Azeb came into contact with our staff, seeking support to re-enter the workforce, which she had left following the birth of her daughter, now 3 years old. Holding a diploma as a social and health worker obtained in Italy, Azeb expressed the need to update her skills and strengthen her ability to actively search for work. She was thus involved in a targeted path of five job counseling meetings, during which she worked on both transversal skills, such as self-awareness, effective communication, and enhancing her empathy—an essential quality for the social and health sector—and practical needs, such as writing a concise and effective CV, exploring new networks, and participating in training courses.
After the course, the staff continued to support her with remote follow-up, helping her regain confidence in navigating the world of work. Thanks to the support of Work Is Progress and her determination, Azeb secured a job as a social and health assistant for private individuals, with a permanent part-time contract and flexible hours that allow her to balance work and family life. Today, Azeb has regained autonomy and dignity through a profession that reflects her vocation and skills. The journey with Work Is Progress was crucial in guiding her toward a conscious and sustainable professional choice.
